Elonë, a young woman from Karlsruhe, Germany, is writing feminist messages on period pads and posting them up in public places around her city.
She first shared her project idea on Tumblr two days ago. Since then, her photo has been shared over 100,000 times.
The messages she’s writing on the pads focus on women’s rights issues, such as tackling street harassment and taking a stand against victim blaming.
The message Elonë shared in the original viral photo was inspired by Twitter user @cutequeer96, who made the comment last September.
Her project has now proved so popular that she is getting messages from people in Brazil, Sweden, and students in US colleges who want to start their own versions.
Elonë’s is asking those who want to replicate the project in their cities to tag their photos and to spread the message that “feminism means equality, not men hate.”
Despite her project’s popularity, Elonë has received abusive messages on her Tumblr page.
But that hasn’t deterred Elonë. In response to one critic, she said: “Why the fuck did you just get offended? Because of period pads?”
She told another critic that she regularly donates pads to homeless women in her local area.
BuzzFeed News has contacted Elonë for an interview. In the meantime, you can follow the project on her Tumblr and Instagram.
